Charlie,

If you get too tangled in the gamma match, one of the easiest systems to 
build is the hairpin match.  Make the driven element a little too short 
and cut a hairpin six or so inches long.  Short the hairpin at various 
places along its length until you find the sweet spot of SWR minimum. 
Then cut a new hairpin  to that length.  You may use that as is or you 
may choose to bond the "U" of the hairpin to the boom, in which case 
you'd have a beta match rather than a hairpin.  Either way, it'll work fine.

I used the hairpin method in building my 12/17 meter yagi (two elements 
per band).  The hairpin feeds the 17m section and the 12m driven element 
is shock excited.
