Pete,
No sir, you must have been asleep when you read what I said (or maybe
I wasn't too clear that early in the morning.) The "Fault 99" was one of
the Alpha's protection circuits detecting something was not right in the
amp so it shut it down. This was when I first pressed the power switch to
turn the amp on. It could have been that it was unable to move the
bandswitch or there was a problem with the high voltage or some other major
error condition. The Alpha 87a checks and monitors a multitude of items
that, if out of range, will cause the amp to shut down in order to protect
itself. The statement about not apply any RF was my saying that now that
the amp had successfully powered on, I was not going to apply any RF since
I was so tired. I have since applied RF and all is well.
Dave,
You should know that when W8AH became a SK, his huge accumulation of
equipment (including multiple amplifiers) was passed on to several WVDXA
members. We ain't that rich here in WV - we just got some good deals.
In my case, I owned an Alpha 86 and when Alpha introduced the 87a in
1991, they offered it to current Alpha owners at a discount. I bought mine
new at that time for $3,995.
