DXers,
Stephanie and I leave Thursday for Israel and our annual Holyland Tour
that includes a visit to Jordan's Petra
http://www.nabataea.net/petra.html one of the "new" 7 Wonders of the
World. We return home on Sunday, January 27. This year there will be
11 of us and we will be celebrating this, the 60th "Birthday" of the
nation of Israel. I should mention that Jerry K8OQL, another WVDXA
member, will be rejoining our "family" as we travel Israel from top to
bottom. And I am once again taking along my Icom IC-706MKIIG and a
portable vertical antenna and plan to operate from some of the hotels
in the evening and in early morning, primarily CW on 40m, 30m, 20m,
17m. Last year, I had a schedule with Dave, WA8WV and Don W8DL and did
copy them very early one morning while at the Sea of Galilee but
unfortunately they did not copy my calls. I did have a fairly nice 17m
opening at the end of my trip from Eilat, port city at the Red Sea and
had QSOs with a few Stateside stations. But you can work EU stations
all day and night from 4X. I will be able to send emails to the WVDXA
reflector from there with my cell phone and will advise when I am QRV
and what freq in case anyone is interested in checking propagation.
Thank goodness Big Pete K4OM worked the recent E4 operation and now I
won't have to risk going into, "Palestine," the Israeli territory
"occupied" by the arabs.

We will be at Masada at the Dead Sea on Tuesday, January 22 and so I
hope to also be able to operate again while there, even if only briefly
 from this famous historic landmark.

Although I have not yet heard from Ruben, 4Z5FI to determine if Jerry
and I can operate from there. Ruben is the chief electrician at this
park and has helped get me on top with my amateur gear to operate from
the plateau the past two years.

If you guys have a meeting twixt now and my return, I hope it is a good
one! Maybe Clark will share the "real" secrets behind his successes
with the 160-m inverted L--- "How to Go from Zero to DXCC on TopBand"
I really enjoy reading about his climb up the top band ladder and am
green with envy. I know when UltraViolet gets his "killer" on the air,
we are really going to hear some stories... Go Big Phil! And sorry
about your Buckeyes, ouch!

In the meantime, please keep our small group of pilgrims in your
thoughts and prayers and hope that "W" doesn't go over there in advance
of our travel and stir up the hornets........ :-)

Shalom, shalom and 73,
Hal W8HC
