Greg,

Yes, I did use a vacuum variable because I just happened to have one
available. I did not use one on Tim's antenna. My variable had a top end
of 1,000 pF I think. Because my antenna is too long I had to run the
vacuum variable up to the top end to just get the SWR down to 1.7 : 1. So,
it is not really required, if you have the ability to trim the antenna like
we did with Tim, KC8UHE's.

On Tim's antenna all we did was connect the coax to a regular ceramic
insulator with the center conductor going to the vertical "Inverted-L"
portion and the shield going to the elevated radial. We put an insulator
at the end of the radial and the top-hat portion. Other than that, there
were no other "Parts."

On my antenna I put the RF Choke in line (the description for that is
on my Blog) and the vacuum variable between the Choke and the
antenna. Other than that, there were no other "Parts" on mine.
