There will be a meeting of the West Virginia DX Association this coming
Monday, April 21, 2008, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Museum of Radio and
Technology in Huntington. The club will supply some cake, desserts, and
coffee for refreshments.
The program will feature a recording of the actual distress call from
the Titanic which went out 96 years ago this month. What's amazing about it
is that the radio operator, John Phillips, sent perfect code with a straight
key at 25 plus WPM while the ship was badly listing and while noise from
steam was roaring so loudly that he could not hear any replies.
The meeting will also be a reception for retiring Israel Amateur Radio
Club (IARC) President Joseph Obstfeld, 4X6KJ and his wife Ruth 4X4CM. They
will be visiting here in Huntington next month and this is their first-ever
visit to WV. Joe survived the holocaust during WWII and eventually ended up
in Israel with his wife and two daughters. He became a ham in 1983 and has
had an illustrious career in various leadership positions with the IARC,
Israel's equivalent to ARRL and serving IARU Region 1. He has operated with
King Hussein JY1 with the special JY74X Operation in July 1995. He is a
DXer and is ARRL DXCC Card checker for the Middle East.
If you are not familiar with the location of the Museum, here is the
main web page for the museum:

Here is a set of directions and a map:
<http://oak.cats.ohiou.edu/~postr/MRT/map.htm<http://oak.cats.ohiou.edu/%7Epostr/MRT/map.htm>
>
The important part of the directions on that page are these:
Exit as shown to 14th Street West away from the Ohio River. You will go
under a railroad bridge on 14th Street West. Just after the bridge will be a
stop sign with a very stationary full-sized locomotive on your right as a
landmark. Turn right onto Memorial Boulevard and make an immediate left onto
Harvey Road which looks like a one-and-a-half lane country road. Less than
half a mile further, in front of a church, turn left onto Florence Avenue.
Half a block further, the Museum and its fenced-in parking area will be
visible on your right.
If you click anywhere on the map on the following link, it will take
you to Yahoo Maps where you can zoom in or out and see exactly how to get to
the Museum. Note that the Museum is marked on this map by a red star:
<http://oak.cats.ohiou.edu/~postr/MRT/map2.htm<http://oak.cats.ohiou.edu/%7Epostr/MRT/map2.htm>
>
Basically, you just have to get to Huntington and then follow the other
directions. After you turn left onto Florence Avenue, just look for the
antennas on your right and turn into the fenced parking lot.
If you have contact with any other local radio clubs, please pass this
information on to them as some of their members may be interested in
attending.
