Yes, there's good news finally on the power line noise front. After much
pleading and cajoling, AEP has now pretty well cleared up our noise at the
radio museum in Huntington. I just left the museum after spending several hours
there today with a three-truck crew from AEP and by the time we left, what
little noise remained on the radio blanked out fully when the FT-1000 noise
blanker was turned on.
This has taken nine months. AEP crews have been there on and off since last
Summer chasing down the many problems. At first they changed out bad
insulators on poles immediately adjacent to the museum. Then they fixed some
grounds. Then a lightning arrestor. Earlier this week they replaced a
transformer. Today they came back and replaced insulators on several more poles in the
neighborhood. After that, I worked a station in Sweden who was only S2 and
had no problem hearing him.
So anyone who needs a place to make a QSO with Scarborough Reef next month
has a good place to go. The beam at the museum is FIVE elements on 10, FOUR on
12-15-17-20, and THREE on 40. It's on a tower that can go up to 75 feet.
The FT-1000 is connected to an SB-200 linear.
And maybe during the next WV QSO party we won't be called "alligators."
