I was lucky enough to have a good teacher, Hal. Elwood Hedrick made the
stuff come to life. He put his hand on my shoulder during class about
the first week of West Virginia History studies. He said, "Your going
to be one of my Golden Horseshoe winners and I always have Golden
Horseshoe winners." That year, three of the four from Summers County
were not only from Hinton, but from Mr. Hedrick's class.

Hinton was a good place to learn about amateur radio too. Andy
Timberlake W8MN taught me and also helped Bob W8KBM get on the air.
Of course Buzz Collins K8CFT gets some of the credit. He administered
the Novice exam and helped me put up antennas when I moved from Hinton
to Oak Hill.
