Do you remember the surprise Christmas gift DXers were given in
December 2000?  That was when the late N4BQW, Chuck Brady, made a
surprise visit to Bouvet Island and operated as 3Y0C.  It looks as if
another surprise visit to this uninhabited, remote, sub-Antarctic
volcano island was in the works. The SA Agulhas arrived at Bouvet
Island (3Y/B) on December 12th around 0600Z.  Several hours it
departed, but before leaving they dropped of a five man team, including
one Amateur Radio operator.  The team will be on the island for up to
three months.  ZS6GCM, Petrus Kritzinger, is the team's medic and has
just recently obtained his callsign.  He has no HF experience, reports
ZS1AU, Dennis Wells.  Petrus does have full HF privileges.  Late on
Saturday he spoke with ZR1GCB, Craig Blanckenberg, on a sat phone
confirming the team is safely on Bouvet Island.  Amateur Radio activity
will not begin until after the team gets completely settled in and even
then it will most likely be during "his evenings as he has other tasks
to perform", says ZS1AU, Dennis.  The trip had been planed for several
months; however Petrus was not added until the last minute.  ZS1BCE,
David Hartzenberg, and ZR1GRB, Craig, helped Petrus with an IC-735 just
moments before board the boat heading south.  He has a vertical for 10,
15, 20 and 40 meters.  He does not have an amplifier.  As of this time
we do not yet know the 3Y callsign that Petrus will be using.
