Garry,
Worse. I had my first Tashjian WT-51 fold over at the 22 foot level on
Dec. 1 2003, with my Bencher Skyhawk and VHF/UHF antennas. The boom of
the Skyhawk punched a hole in the newly reshingled roof of our
glassed-in side porch. On December 1 of this past year, the replacement
WT-51 folded at exactly the same spot on the same day of the year, while
supporting a Cushcraft X-9 and 2m/70cm boomers. The tower wasn't
overloaded and it didn't meet its 80 mph rating in a 60 mph wind.
My mechanical engineer pal, W3RV thinks that the direct winds are being
coupled with an uplift created when the wind hits the side of the hill
(a pasture). My 70' Rohn 25 tower with a Cushcraft 40m beam and
homebrew two elements (per band) 17/12m yagi has ridden these same winds
perfectly.
My answer is to erect another Rohn 25 tower (with Hazer) away from edge
of the hill and somewhat shielded by the house. It'll carry the Pro-37
and VHF/UHF boomers (as soon as I can figure a way to mount them so that
they aren't in the way of the Hazer's operation). I'll have 54 feet of
Rohn 25 out of the ground and the tribander will sit a couple of feet
above the top of the tower at about 56 feet. The house sits at 1520
feet, high by Marshall County standards.
